who exactly is successful?

In class today while we were reading about the college students exploring their roots, something stood out to me. In the 'Where i stand and Why' story Latoyas grandfather basically just wants her to succeed in life, that left me asking myself who actually succeeds in life. A lot of Minorities and African Americans become lawyers, doctors, teachers and so on but not of a lot of Minorities and African Americans get noticed, maybe in their inner cirlce they are successful but to the "white corporate world" do they really stand out? its 2010 and finally we get a black president, it took that long just for the new generation to vote for him. I was just wondering what would it take for a African American and/or Minorities to get noticed in this white corporate world, how much more would we have to do, how much farther would we have to go? what would be the major differences between African Americans and Minorities compared to White people in the white corporate world eyes. i dont know, i guess i was just thinking and decided to post it on here, what do you guys think?

  1. I think when we compare that grandfather's perspective and compare it to the perspectives of our generation, what's changed? I can't wait until we address this in class, but are we living in a post-racial world? (Supposedly, Obama signifies that we do live in a post-racial world!)

Also, we need to ask the question of "who exactly is successful" but we also need to ask "what is successful" too.

  2. I don't think President Obama signifies living in a post racial world. If it did he wouldn't have had the largest secret service security detail in the history for presidential candidates. And also the most threats for a candidate. I know some people who really express was he really a good presidential candidate? Would he have won if we already have had a president with color? Or was he lucky? In the right time and place, with good speaking abilities? you decide!!!

  3. President Obama's election represented change, but i dont think it signified us living in a post racial world. Racism is always going to be an issue regardless because it was instilled in this country for so long since the beginning.
Sucess... what is being sucessful ? money ? power? or both... I believe sucess comes with individualism and the knowledge of being true to yourself.
