i was just curious on the topic of biracial people.
how many people are actually biracial?
if you are biracial do you associate yourself with one race and not the other?
i certainly do, and i began to wonder, why do we connect with just one culture or one race and not the other.
if you dont connect with just one race, then how do you intertwine each culture into one? how do you associate two or more cultures as one?
if you are not biracial at all, what do you think about those who are biracial and claim to be just one race?
a perfect example of biracial society is those who are half black and half white.
when Obama became president many people said, "finally, a black president."
why do we automatically assume Obama is black when he is in fact, half white? many celebrities and people in everyday life are biracial, but why is it so natural to assume they are just black?
more importantly why do these people associate more with one race and not the other.
is it the color of skin, facial features?
this also applies to those who do not look similar to the culture and race they claim to be. where do those people belong?

Janet, I think you touch upon so many great points! Why do we choose to identify with anything? Any one of the numerous groups we belong to? Why do we prefer one over the other? Even more, why do we choose to assign one "less" importance that the other?
ReplyDeleteAlso, you're right about Barack Obama. But is it different if he were to have only one grandparent, or one great grandparent, or one great great great grandparent that was white? What about the fact that he is the children of immigrants? Do we ever really mention that?
There are personal reasons why...
And there are societal reasons why...
