Culture

What is "American Culture"? Is it what allowed President Obama the ability to not wear a tie when he addressed the DNC over the weekend? A formal event.
I was once told it does not look good and it is not ok, if a tie is not worn with a suit. It does not matter where your going. I responded with, I thought it was common not to wear a tie with a suit. I see it all the time.
what do you think?

  1. times are changing and as times change society begins to change as well and cultures and traditions begin to change. i think that Obama not wearing a tie just shows how times are changing. I thought it was fine how he didnt wear a tie, hes comfortable without it.

  2. Well, its not like the man dresses himself. Him, his wife, and thier daughters have people who dress them when they go out on those types of affiars. Personally, i dont think a suit is complete without a tie of some sort, but hey what are you gunna do?* I do sort of feel like it was a little insulting to the DNC just beacuse it might come off as a lack of resepect, but i wouldnt go over board with it.

  3. I love this dialogue about the power of appearances. Why is there an uproar about whether or not he wore a tie?

What does a suit mean to you?

    What does a tie mean?

Have any of you ever had to change what he/she wore? Why? What was the thought process involved? Did it matter?

  4. to be honest i have no idea what a suit means, i'm guessing it means well mannered or well dressed? a tie just goes with the suit like shoelace with a sneaker. i personally never had to change what i wore because its more like going with society, one time bell bottoms were in and now its skinny jeans, and in the summer it was the whole 70s look all over again. i think people follow the trend. and some people tend to follow what they want to follow. Obama is showing the new trend of basically wearing no tie at an event and if im not mistake the first picture he took at the white house was with out a tie? im not sure but im guessing its his new thing, not wearing ties. so yeah. ?

  5. Personally, in my own opinion i would say that a suit signifies the way someone carries himself. It shows class, power, self-confidence, and well-mannered behavior. I don't really have an idea of what a tie might mean but I would say that its just a little extra to go with the suit like maybe with all that class and mannerism, there's a wild or a unique side to that person. I did have to change the way I dress a few tomes but only when I'm giving a speech, only because I had to present myself in a formal way that demands my audience's attention and respect.

  6. I think that by doing so it makes him different and this is what people were looking for someone different more up to date. To me by not wearing a tie it makes him look younger or am I wrong? I say this because I always hated wearing a tie especially since I only saw rich men and white men with them. So by not wearing one doesn't that show that he is one of us? or that he isn't like the rest? **Had to correct some mistakes**

  7. When i think of suits and ties i think about the corporate world. Ones appearance and the way they carry themselves is a representation of who they are or who they want to be precieved as. Its sad to say but judgements are passed by strangers everyday just by a glance and a stare. So the way we present outselves are extremely important.
