In juicing up my final paper I am trying to talk to my Mother's side of the family a little more (the Hispanic side). But the more I talk to them the more I realize there are just fundamental differences that I cannot grasp. In my culture you are taught that as an individual you do not exist you are a part of something greater, a family. No matter what happens to you in life fail or succeed they are with you- maybe they root for you maybe not- but they are ever present. Yet with my mother's side this is not the case- they live for today and what makes them as an individual happy... and it was not until trying to explain why my father's side has much more in the way of monetary gain then my mother's side. I am really beginning to understand some parts of me that I had always thought were just "the facts of life" but now I see that it depends on who you talk to.-

the reason i have posted this is because had it not been for this class that teaches me to approch things in a cutlural lighting i would never have looked at these situations with this lense.
ReplyDeletePerception is so important, Joanna. We have direct access to ours. But what about those of others? To understand the Dominant-Minority group paradigm, is to understand (or begin to understand and question) why a lot of things in society are the way they are. And why they aren't. Make sure you apply a theoretical framework, i.e. our readings, to your essay! Great connections!
